Grave Foundations

How long a grave lasts is decided by what is under it, not by the stone on top.

The substructure is the ground the grave will stand on. Side walls are built, the bed the cover stones will sit on is set, and the limits of the plot are fixed at this stage.

None of it is visible once the work is finished. Because it is not visible, it is where corners are most often cut — and it is where most of the trouble starts in graves that later settle, shift or take in water.

For a new grave this is the first stage of the job. On an existing grave with a failing base, the stone can be lifted and the substructure rebuilt.
